We loitered in the air over Alyssa and the unknown shifter until a gyrocopter came to pull them from the water. Once they were safely inside the cab of the gyrocopter, our squad headed back to the Astral Communion.

Priya was waiting for us on the flight deck when we arrived. She was accompanied by four burly horsekin marines and gave us a nod as we approached.

“What’s that?” I asked, gesturing to the collar she had in her hand.

“It’s a copper collar,” she said, holding it up for us to examine.

“It’s lovely,” Hope said, tail wagging as she got a closer look at it. “I've never seen a copper collar. I heard they were all melted down for the war effort.”

“That’s partially true,” Priya said.

I leaned in to get a better look. Hope wasn't lying, it was a beautiful piece. The collar had three chains, two copper and one stainless steel with the steel one in the middle. The copper chains were interlaced with the steel one with two large rings at both ends of the chain where a copper-coated lock held the ends together.

“Don’t you have a collar already?” Lillian asked.

“A wolfkin can never have too many collars,” Hope said with a smile.

“Would you wear something like this?” I asked.

“I’ll wear anything you put on me,” she said, wagging her tail.

“You can’t have this one, wolf girl,” Priya said. “This collar is made specifically to suppress the gifts of shifters.”

Though she specifically said “shifters,” the girls still took a big step back, fearing they might accidentally end up with it around their lovely necks.

“How does it work?” Hope asked from behind me.

“First, it only works once the lock is engaged to close the circuit. Second, it uses copper. Why do you think you never see copper jewelry?”

“Because it’s needed for the war effort.” Addison said.

“As I said, that’s partially true.” Priya smirked. “The true reason you don’t see copper jewelry is because we discovered that bands of copper in the forms of necklaces, bracelets, anklets or rings interfere with some gifts. A single ring won’t do much, but this much copper in this configuration is designed to stop shifters from…shifting.”

On cue, the gyrocopter with Alyssa and the mysterious shifter arrived overhead and set down on the starboard side of the flight deck in a designated gyrocopter landing zone in front of the command tower.

I moved to the door and helped Alyssa out before hugging her tight in my arms. “I’m glad you didn’t get hurt!” I shouted over the noise created by the gyrocopter blades.

“Me too!” she shouted back. “Thank you for saving me.”

We embraced for a moment longer than others would think was necessary, but I didn’t care. We were finally pulled apart by the medical staff of the ship who were waiting to take her off in a wheelchair.

“But I’m fine!” she protested as they sat her in the chair.

“Sorry ma’am,” said the pantherkin ship doctor. “Standard procedures after a crash and water recovery is a full physical examination and a twenty-four hour period of medical observation in the sick bay.
